The Carmel Mar Thoma Center
Established on Sept 24, 2018, the center is jointly used by the Mar Thoma Diocese of North America & Europe, and the Mar Thoma Church, Atlanta, Georgia.The Mar Thoma Church, a reformed Indian church, traces its roots to 52 AD wherein one of the 12 disciples of Christ, St. Thomas sailed to Southern India and converted Hindus to christianity. The church is apostolic in origin, universal in nature, evangelical in principle, ecumenical in outlook, oriental in worship and episcopal in character.
The primary objective of the center is to facilitate mission work for the enhancement of the Lord’s kingdom. The center will aid and assist the Mar Thoma Mission Board’s mission projects worldwide. The motto of the Mar Thoma Mission Board is – Together we can change the world. The current mission projects include
- Light to Life – a venture to support education and development of under-privileged children,
- Mexico Mission – an outreach program in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico for the fishermen community,
- Native American Mission – focused on Native American communities in Oklahoma, Alabama, Arizona and New Mexico to provide them spiritual resources and opportunities to nurture their faith in Jesus Christ,
- Neighborhood Mission – outreach activities focused on the parish neighborhoods and
- India Mission – spread the gospel through our mission fields across India.
Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa is the bishop of the Diocese of North America & Europe. He received the MTh Degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and PhD from Banaras Hindu University. Prior to his arrival in the US, he led the Mumbai – Delhi Diocese, and Kottayam-Kochi Diocese.
He is a member of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Central Committee and has worked in WCC Policy Reference Committee, and WCC Reference Committee on Justice and Peace.
